Contractors are focused on strong maintenance programmes for their power generation equipment, rather than simply replacing units after three years, said Terry McGuire, general manager of Power and Industrial at Al-Futtaim Auto and Machinery Company (FAMCO).

"The market is becoming more challenging due to current economic situations, the influx of low cost product and the fact that the contracting companies are maintaining instead of replacing existing stock," said McGuire.

"The trend was to replace gensets after 3 years whereby now maintenance programmes are more prevalent."

The strongest sectors for genset sales over the past few years have been rental companies, contracting companies, and export companies, said McGuire.

FAMCO can provide variety of maintenance and service contracts for continuous performance monitoring, said McGuire, "which leads to reduced overall costs via regular and thorough maintenance visits, and subsequently give high residual value."

In the UAE, FAMCO sell Himoinsa gensets, which range from 16-637kVA in the professional range, and 670-2000kVA in the heavy range. Chief benefits of the offering includes maintenance free batteries almost in complete range, user friendly control panel for an easy man machine interface, external fuel filling, a four-pole circuit breaker, and strong canopies directly from the Himoinsa factory with low noise level and allowing easy access for maintenance, said McGuire.

FAMCO also sell the smaller Yanmar gensets, which is one of the most reliable engines in its range, said McGuire.

"Yanmar manufactures up to 15 kVA portable type gensets that are very useful and easy to handle at construction sites," he said. "They also build up to 45 kVA silent & semi silent type gensets with 3000 RPM engine speed which leads to compact size genset in this range."

In recent months, Himoinsa introduced its new range with Himoinsa engine. "The concept is to have a 100% Himoinsa branded genset, consisting of Himoinsa engine, Himoinsa alternator, Himoinsa controller, Himoinsa canopy etc."

Yanmar has introduced new eG55 silent type 5kW single phase genset.

In Qatar, FAMCO is the authorised distributor for Himoinsa, and there a plans to further expand the brand in the Gulf; while they have authorised distribution for Yanmar in Qatar, Oman and Africa.
